A new smartphone device from Japan’s top Android software manufacturer is being called the “Google Japan” or “google moby” in English. This device will use Google’s Android system to allow users in Japan to surf the Internet, play games and enjoy Android applications. The plan is for the device to be launched sometime in 2021. The idea is that this service will allow users in Japan to have access to many of the same features as an Android mobile phone user would in the U.S. Users will be able to surf the Web, download and view media, play games, check email and use a virtual keyboard.
As with any mobile device, there are some companies in Japan that are not really all that serious about making gaming devices or applications. For example, one company called Japanssoft produces a game called Brain Quest. It appears to be a mini version of the popular Mind Games game developed for the iPhone and iPod Touch. While it may be entertaining for young people, it does not seem that many consumers in Japan will want to buy the brain game to use in their homes.
Despite the bad reputation that some Japanese companies have in the west for releasing bad games and poor-quality apps, there is one Android game publisher in Japan that has created a cult following. Nexon is the maker of several successful online RPG games, including the well-received MapleStory. MapleStory has been adapted into numerous cell phone and handheld game formats. Users can battle other players and manipulate a vast world within the game to complete quests and achieve their goals. It also has social networking capabilities allowing players to connect with other MapleStory fans around the world.
Nexon has not released many details regarding its future plans for MapleStory, but the company did say that it is planning a variety of future titles. It is working on several unannounced titles, and it is unclear whether these games will be made available to western audiences. In a press release, the company did say that it is planning “core” titles for mobile phones, such as an RPG and customizable cards game. The company also has plans for an online strategy game and free-to-play web browser game based on the massively popular World of Warcraft franchise.
Another Japanese android game publisher, Nitendo, has developed a hit game titled, Dragon Nest. The game is similar to that of the popular Sudoku, and users can turn their cell phones into powerful gaming devices that can tap into their brainpower through the Dragon Nest game. Users need to activate the powerful brain wave mode to accomplish tasks in the game.
Unlike its competitor, Nitendo uses a variety of brain stimulating games to keep its users engaged in the fantasy adventure. These games include but are not limited to, Sudoku, Tetris, Word Search, and Solitaire. A new game called Dragon Nest is in development, and it will feature not only images from the Japanese series, but will also include the voice of the main character, Daisuke Enomoto, which is known for his work in the Final Fantasy series. Dragon Nest is scheduled for release sometime during 2021.
The last major Japanese company that we are going to discuss here is Production Farm. This company is also well known for its popular and award winning Mario and Zelda games.
