Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy is based on discoveries made by Osteopaths in the early 1900s. They found that there is a very subtle rhythmic motion in all bones, tissues and fluids of the body. This rhythmic motion is fundamental to life and reflects the health of the individual. The central principle of the therapy is that at the core of the body lies the cerebrospinal fluid which bathes and cushions the brain and spinal cord. This fluid moves in a ‘tide-like’ ebb and flow creating very subtle waves through the rest of the body. This movement is so subtle it can only be measured by very sensitive mechanical instruments but can be felt by the light touch of a trained therapist.
If the body is shocked, either by physical injury or emotional stress it contracts. If the shock is severe, the tissues may stay contracted, holding onto the force of the shock. Stresses, strains, tensions or traumas can be stored in the body and restrict it’s proper function, resulting in mechanical imbalances, pain, illness or emotional and psychological problems. The craniosacral therapist is trained to listen with his or her hands to the rhythmic motion or ‘tides’ and detect problems. The therapist then works with the person’s system to facilitate the release of the stored tension freeing the body from the restrictive patterns, both physical and emotional.
During the treatment you will usually lie on a couch and experience the very light touch of the therapist’s hands. This may be at the head [the cranium], the base of the spine [the sacrum], or the feet. The therapist may hold, with the same light touch, other areas of the body where problems are indicated. The therapy is so gentle it can be used on everyone from babies to the elderly and the very ill. The effects are not always immediate, it may take several sessions to feel the changes, but the results are often long lasting because they are at such a deep level.
You do not need to be ill, however, to benefit from Craniosacral Therapy. It is wonderful for relaxation, stress-relief and generally re-balancing the body and mind. As a whole body therapy, It can be helpful for almost any condition including;
