I have taught the Alexander Technique at the Trinity Centre since 1988 working with all kinds of back problems, tension and stress, and it never ceases to amaze me how helpful Alexander can be for problems that clients may have suffered with for years.
My own introduction to Alexander was after I suffered whiplash following a bicycle accident. I tried all the usual treatments for this kind of injury which enabled me to continue working as an architect, but it was generally only a matter of a few hours after each session before the pain came back, and I was still suffering neck pain two years after the accident.
A friend then recommended the Alexander Technique. When I started having Alexander lessons each one was very relaxing, which was helpful, but what really made a difference was that I was shown how to let go of pain on my own, between lessons.
This is the great thing about the Alexander Technique. The lessons teach you how to look after yourself and your body, so you can relax both physically and mentally in daily work and activities. Indeed Alexander is used by musicians, singers, dancers, in sport and many other walks of life.
I qualified in 1987 as a registered with the Society of Teachers of the Alexander Technique (www.stat.org.uk). This is the national body which sets standards for the profession and the three year 1500 hour full-time training for teachers.
