History

Trinity Natural Health Centre

How it all began

It all started up in 1978  - It s now 31 years ago since the first seeds were sown.

Diana Tinson had inherited some money and she and her brother Ian set up the New Awareness Trust.
In 1983 Diana and Cindy Salmon, Janet Austin (formerly Granet), Liz Cutler and Peter Clifford initially set up the Cancer Support Group.  The first building was at 9 Stockwell St in 1984 and was opened with a library, primarily
with donated books on Healing and Health etc.

Gradually such groups as Biofeedback, Meditation, Healing and a Circle Dance Group were added.
A year later there were 108 members.

After about 6 years the lease was elapsing and new premises had to be found so, with help from
Mardi Robinson of the Lapis Fellowship, the Trinity Centre was born.

Initially the centre was No 12 and No 21 Trinity St. and as No 21 was the last residential property in the street it needed a lot of reconstruction to change it into a Healing Centre - but it was all completed in 1988.

The amazing thing is that at 7.30 am on Sunday 27th November 1988, 70 people turned up to form a human chain to transport everything from Stockwell St to Trinity St. and so the new Trinity Centre was born.

The Trinity Centre really was a real trail blazer back in 1988, when complementary medicine was not so
well accepted– it was all a bit hush hush.
But despite this the Centre attracted many complementary therapists and much interest from the general public
for the library and the workshops as well as the therapies.
Tessa Spencer-Pryce painted a large picture of the tree that had to be removed at No 12, in order for the Tree Room
to be built, and to this day it is still hanging in that room.

It was managed for the first 6 years by Alison Hynam and followed by Steve Knowland who managed
it until the end of 2005.

The large Tree room at No 12 was specifically built for groups, talks and workshops on many varied subjects and attracted many excellent Workshop Leaders from all over the country—Christine Page, Paul Lambillion, Melanie Reinhart—all very well known in their own field, together with many of our own therapists who also
organised and ran their own workshops and Professional Trainings.

Every week there was something going on at the Centre  -Yoga and Tai Chi classes; Meditation  & Healing Groups, Training Courses for Therapists as well as over 25 therapists all working for the welfare of the people of Colchester.

There was also a substantial, unique library with many books donated by members who regularly dropped in for a chat and a moment of calm away from the bustle of the Colchester Streets
In December 2005 The New Awareness Trust decided to take a step back and they sold No 12 (now the Tree Room Centre) and the therapists took over the running of the Trinity Centre
Christiane Mills, Steve Knowland and Elizabeth Campbell, Regina Mason, Julia Kubler and Mark Woodley were the new directors and did a fantastic job dealing with all the arrangements to set out the
new Centre and keep it going.

All through the history of the Trinity Centre we have had the support of many volunteers as we do to this day, and without them we would not have survived.

And now we have moved on—and we were  fortunate enough to have found
another great building—just next door.    We still offer the same great therapists, and workshops including meditation and teaching workshops.  We now have over 20 therapists—all well qualified and experienced in their field.
